Jensen VM9510 Multimedia receiver W/ 7″wide screen Review

In dash CD/DVD/Tuner/MP3 reciever with 7″ wide screen. Purchased for 215$ at the pawn shop used. Can still be had for 300-350$ range as refurbished or closeout online and even in a few big box stores.
Really a lot of super features for an entry level priced in dash multimedia player. Most impressive to me is the very high resolution of the screen. It is the sort of picture and viewing angle you’ll find on units two or three times the price. The screen has a fair range of motion, a few different picture format options, and the motorized movement seems reliable. Also convenient is the 5.1 surround option. It has all the audio outputs for 5.1 and a fair amount of options in setting up the audio preferences.
It has 2 aux inputs (audio and video). Mine is connected to both Xbox and PS2 available with the push of one button! It has one extra video output as well which would come in handy for running multiple screens.
The tuner is fair, and the CD functions well. The MP3 disks MUST be Joliet formated MP3 disks. Data disks full of MP3s in folders will not play nor will DVDs with MP3s on them.
The DVD section is very nice as well and has all the options you’d find in any decent DVD player in a relatively easy to navigate series of menus. This unit does have a few significant drawbacks. Most annoying of which is the noise. It is a noisy unit! It has a built in fan which makes a rather annoying pitched hum on it’s own, and also seems to radiate the noise into the signal to the amps. The fact that the RCA outs are only 2V doesn’t help matters either and requires the amp’s gains to be set a bit higher than optimum for noise rejection.
Also, if you read other reviews there’s a lot of complaints about the buttons and knobs on the unit itself. I actually like the layout, but the two knobs are just awful. Not very responsive, and they seem a bit fragile. Fortunately, the remote does all features (in fact there’s even some features that you MUST have the remote for). Of course, if you lose or destroy the remote you’re in big trouble!
Overall, a fine value at 300$ish or under. It does have loads of features and a super screen that would fit a premium reciever, and at the same time has some pretty glaring drawbacks that you’d expect from something you bought at a swap meet. Definitely a great entry level in dash multimedia unit, but they have a few bugs to work out to be too much more.
