Default Shut down problem in windows xp

About 50% of the time I try to shut down my computer I get a "program not responding" and I have to end it now. The program is "ccSvcHst" this just started about a month ago. When it does this, it takes about 5 minutes for my system to fully shut down. It is getting annoying, does anybody know what this is or how to fix it? I have tried every kind of scan and fix tool that I know of. Repaired windows files, cleaned registry, cleared restore points, defrag, ran full Norton scan. Nothing seems to work. I keep my hard drive very clean and free of clutter and bloatware. I have no clue what triggered this error.

- Windows XP Pro w/all updates
- Norton 360 w/all updates

Here is my hardware
- Motherboard - Chipset Intel i945P Dell Inc. 0FJ030
- Pentium D 3.2 GHz W/2 cores

Can anyone help me out?

I'm new here, been lurking for a few days trying to read through some of the reviews and what not. But, please don't take my/this post as less credible because of my small post count. I am a freelance web developer/designer and work around all ranges of computer hardware day-in and day-out.

Anyway, I highlighted the problem that you're running into with ccSvcHst.exe not shutting down; by the way that is a Norton .exe file. There are various reasons this could be happening, like a real-time scan or update going on in the background--but Anti-Virus companmies are supposed to build in mechanisms to keep this sort of activity from clugging up--when a shutdown process has been inititated.

So, my best advice to you is to contact Symantec/Norton. They're more than likely going to have some kind of fix or knowledge-base article on why this happened, the symptons for this happening or how to fix your problem.

Best of luck!

You might have a bad copy or norton or another scanner running in the background that could easily be causing that problem try turing off norton and see if that helps

I have seen this on my own machine, even with earlier version of Windows, which lets you know how long I have been messing with computers, LOL.

When a program isn't responding it's easiest to just close it from the task manager. You can go back and try trouble shooting, but usually it is a temporary issue that disappears with the next time you the program is loaded.

I use AVG antivirus - it doesnt use the resources that norton does, but its just as good, you get frequent updates for it, so id recommend AVG - id also go for spybot S&D - its an anti spyware program that gets rid of other nasty programs =)

I use AVG too - I use adaware instead of spybot though - but i have used spybot in the past - all three are very good programs along with zonealarm for firewall
